Those that love to travel by aeroplane around the country and beyond to overseas locations are often living out of suitcases and bags, and within their luggage, they must also find the means to store their jewellery.
This is not just for practical reasons such as being able to access their jewellery easily and protecting it, but also for security reasons, especially if some or all of their jewellery is valuable.
Thankfully, there is no shortage of options to store jewellery when travelling and for jet setters who travel frequently by aeroplane, we must first give a key piece of advice.
That advice is to never place your jewellery in your checked baggage.
It might seem the most convenient, but believe us when we say, whilst the risk of your jewellery ending up on a different plane or arriving in a different city to you is rare, it does happen often enough for you to not take that risk.
As for how you store your jewellery whilst travelling and for when you are in your hotel, we can divide them into traditional methods and DIY.
The DIY methods use items that you might not usually associate with jewellery, but they provide some clever means of storing it.
It might be that you use a combination of both traditional and DIY to ensure all your jewellery is safe but also accessible when required.
Traditional Methods
Jewellery Roll: Made from leather or fabric, this is a lightweight solution that takes up little space in hand luggage.
The better ones have sections for specific types of jewellery along with compartments, some of which are zipped.
Once everything is inside, it can be rolled or folded to protect the jewellery.
Jewellery Travel Case: There are travel storage cases for jewellery that can be classified as hand luggage when flying.
They are usually solid and thus provide robust protection for jewellery items inside.
The downside is their size which might be great if you have a lot of jewellery but if you are flying, they will most likely have to be stored in the overhead compartment.
Jewellery Pouches: Unless you have dozens of jewellery items, using jewellery pouches could be an option.
These would allow you to place single items of jewellery or items of the same type in each pouch.
As pouches are relatively small they could easily be placed in hand luggage for each flight.
DIY Methods
Towels: This requires two towels of equal size. Lay out jewellery on one towel, place the other tower on top, and then roll them to create a DIY jewellery roll.
Straws: A trick to avoid necklaces, chains, and bracelets from becoming tangled is to thread each one through a plastic straw.
Medication Boxes: These are plastic boxes with compartments for pills. For travelling, you place small items of jewellery in the compartments instead.
Carabiners: These provide a robust means of storing all kinds of jewellery such as rings and bracelets, and they make accessing the jewellery easy.
Buttons: Specifically used for earrings, where each one is threaded through one of the holes in the button to keep them secure and together in a pair.
Soap Dish: Rather than carry soap in this, use the soap dish to store jewellery items such as rings and earrings.
Sweet Tins: Once you have enjoyed your mints or toffees, keep the tin, and use it as a simple and robust jewellery travel storage tin.
